How often should you service your car?

Do you postpone servicing your car because you think it can probably wait? Here’s a fun fact for you, you’re not alone! Ignoring the warning light on your dashboard reminding you to service your car is probably not a great idea as servicing your car at regular intervals would save you a lot of hassle and money. The question though, how often should you service your car?

Service Your Car Regularly

Well, regularly is definitely what most people would aim for, but how regular is regularly! In reality, it really depends on your car model, the make of your car, its age, and its condition. These things matter since they give an indication of how much you’ve used your car. For example, it might be time to change your tyres without you knowing, or worse, find that the engine suddenly failed and it’s not fun to be stranded on the side of the road.

As a general rule, most car manufacturers and mechanics would give you specific timeframe and distant intervals before your next service is due. Most would advise to service your car every 6 months or 5,000KM (or whichever comes first) however, this is just for an average car. With vehicles under more intense workloads, that will require additional interim services.

Why Should I service my car every 6 months or every 5,000KM?

Servicing your car on regular basis will ensure that your car is in good shape and running as it should be, and that yourself and others are safe on the roads.

Also servicing your car often will help you avoid costly and expensive repairs. It’s just like checking up with the dentist twice a year. You get to fix small issues and problems that might occur with your engine and will get your car to last longer.

It’s always a good idea as well to have a chat with your mechanic especially if there’s a big job coming up.

Did you know that we provide a mobile mechanic service, so you wouldn’t have to worry about leaving your car at the mechanic so often?

What does a standard car service include?

Once you book your appointment, mechanics will check on main areas of your car such as the engine, braking and suspension in addition to systems and areas that keep your car working smoothly. Mechanics will also identify issues that could possibly become huge problems if left unchecked. Remember fixing problems early on will save yourself trouble and money down the line.

So generally speaking, your car will be checked for the below:

  • Engine oil and filters
  • Brakes
  • Flushing and changing fluids
  • Replacing spark plugs where needed
  • Checking the air condition system and replacing cabin filters where needed
  • Check lights

Did you know that a car with a full-service history will make you money if you try to sell or exchange models?

Tips for servicing your car:

  • Be organised and schedule your car service in advance: It is always recommended not to wait and schedule a last-minute appointment where you need to rush to find the next available mechanic. Always schedule your appointment well in advance so if something happened and you needed to reschedule, you have enough time to do so without risking the safety of your vehicle
  • Find a mobile mechanic: Although going to a workshop can be a seamless experience, finding a good mobile mechanic will save you time and will make it easier for you to schedule regular servicing without worrying how you’ll travel around once your car is parked at the mechanic for servicing.
  • Keep an eye for any errors: Try to keep an eye for any errors your car might have and always check with your mechanic and inform them of any errors ahead of time so you make sure you get enough time to take care of all issues while in service.
