NSW Blue Slip Inspection

An Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection report, or in other words, a Blue Slip, is a requirement by the NSW government to make sure that unregistered vehicles are safe on the roads and meet specific identity and design standards.

A blue slip inspection is for unregistered vehicles that need to be registered and driven in NSW. The blue slip is requested by NSW’s Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) mainly to make sure that the vehicle you want to register meets NSW’s safety standards and is eligible to be on the roads.

You will require a blue slip if your vehicle has one of the following conditions:

• Your vehicle’s registration has expired more than 3 months ago.
• The vehicle is registered in a different state or overseas and you need to drive it permanently in NSW. The blue slip inspection needs to be done within two weeks of the vehicle’s arrival in NSW.
• The vehicle was previously written-off but has been approved again for future registration.
• The vehicle has no number plates.
• The vehicle has gone through major changes (such as having a new engine) and requires adjustments in its registration records.
• A vehicle needs defect notices cleared.

Since it’s an inspection for unregistered cars, checking for car ownership is a crucial requirement. Our inspector will check for the car’s VIN and engine numbers, the chassis number and identification. If we find that any of the details provided don’t match the system, we won’t issue the slip.

We advise you to prepare all relevant documentation before you come to the appointment. If you have any receipts proving that you bought the car or major parts of it, please bring them to your blue slip inspection appointment.
